Tonight, a dream ends for one kid from Kalamazoo. Growing up, Derek Jeter told everyone he met with absolute certainty that one day, he would be the shortstop for the New York Yankees. And even though he was encouraged to pursue more “realistic” dreams, he continued to chase what he truly wanted. And he did it. Over the past 20 years, he’s been the hero and inspiration for so many kids, living his dream every summer, piecing together a career that at times seemed straight out of a fairy tale. And tonight, he’s going to walk onto the field of his dreams for the last time. Derek, thank you for so many magical childhood memories and for constantly being an exemplary role model and inspiration for me and so many others. Someday, when my kids ask me if dreams really do come true, I’ll be sure to tell them all about you.
I saw this on snapchat and it’s probably the one of the most beautiful sports scenes I’ve ever seen.
Derek Jeter was a class act not only as a baseball player but as an athlete.
You will be missed.
